Crystalens by Eyeonics Can be Balanced Billed to Medicare Patients
For years Medicare has refused to allow patients to be balanced billed for any additional costs relating to a Medicare covered procedure. This was Medicare's way of protecting their members from excessive or unnecessary costs. However, as new technology in the IOL industry became more mainstream, this ruling became a detriment to quality of life. Medicare members diagnosed with cataracts were not allowed to purchase their own IOLs, period. Even if they asked the physician to not bill Medicare for any of the related services!
Medicare rules wouldn't allow a Participating Provider to offer covered services for cash payments. Even if the Medicare Member agreed to pay for the entire procedure with their own funds. On May 9th, Medicare reversed this ruling and is now allowing Medicare Members to be balanced billed for the new multifocal IOLs. This is especially good news for Eyeonics and their $850.00 crystalens and Alcon with their $875.00 Restor lens. Medicare only allows $150 for the IOL, but now patients can offer to pay the remaining $700 or $725 and take advantage of this new technology. More shaking out is expected, since the cost of inserting these lenses and the post-op care expenses are also higher than the standard IOL normally used.
The usual and customary charges for non Medicare patients is around $4,800 per eye and the average reimbursment from Medicare is $1,500 per eye. The $3,300 difference may be more than Medicare expects and more than Medicare Members will be willing to pay. But at least Medicare recipients now have access to the latest technology.
